基本信息 "The pen is indeed mightier than the sword" What is a Rune?
And what is Runic Magic?
Runic Magic is a type of magic that is not genetically passed to the next generation but taught in a University. By writing certain symbols of a dead language on paper you are able to perform tasks that would be classified as "magic" due to the breaking of laws of nature and physics. Thus a Rune is a piece of paper that those symbols and phrases have been written on. Those outside of the University (anyone not a student, graduate, or professor) are not allowed to know how it is done. But to those that are, the key is in the ink. You could use any type of paper or pen you wished. But the ink ... It's in the ink. "But what makes the ink special?" you might ask. This information will be released as site wide plots continue. (muahaha)
Those who wish to partake in the Runic practice must undergo years of studying the Olden language before they're even allowed to attempt their first. Why? Because the practice demands absolute precision or the consequences can be horrendously and grotesquely unforgiving. A single mistaken dash or mis-stroke could lead to excruciating deaths for anyone involved and even numerous innocents depending on what is written. Thus there are rankings among those in the practice and corresponding symbols/phrases that are allowed to be taught to each one.
Question And Answer section
问题与解答 Q. Can a cyborg or magi practice Runic Magic?
A. No. Keeping in mind that Runes can only be written in a special kind of ink the University regulates said ink with an intense vigor. No one outside of the University knows what gives the ink magical qualities so at this time in the site's plot, it's impossible to replicate it. And then the final nail in the coffin, the University has a very intense application process which has proven to be ehhhhh, a bit racist? To date they have only accepted humans. So no, not at this time can a magi or cyborg practice Runic magic. They can however, if they are studious enough, study the Olden Language. So you could recognize and translate different symbols if it fits your character's personality but you can't be a practitioner.
Q. Can my character practice Runic Magic without being a student or professor of the University?
A. Following the same logic as the previous answer the character needs to have some sort of tie to the University to practice Runic Magic (because they're the only suppliers of the ink). I would say being a graduate of the University or a retired professor would be two acceptable options.
Q. Can I use spells that aren't listed here?
A. No. In order to lessen the likely hood of power playing we're asking that you keep to the list here. At the same time we are aware that Mandarin Chinese is a language of literally over 86,000 characters. So if you come up with an idea for a spell please feel free to message admin Rinny and she'll see if it fits into the Runic system.

When it came time to decide if I wanted an actual language to represent this ancient awe-inspiring and all powerful written word there was only one choice as far as I was concerned.
Mandarin Chinese. Not only do I get to take advantage of my years worth of studying the language I've grown to adore but it's non-alphabetic. More complex Chinese characters are built up of less complex characters and do not exist upon a Latin alphabet foundation, which was the concept I wished to grasp. Warning, you'll witness my hardcore inner nerd if you read the example.
EXAMPLE: one of the phrases for cell phone 手機 (or 手机 in the simplified system) when broken down means
"hand (手) machine (機 or 机)" ♥Traditional: Which can be broken down even further. The second symbol 機 (machine)'s first radical is 木 which means tree. There are two radicals which make up the second symbol: 幺乡 (the top part) which means "short thread" and 戍 (the bottom part) which means "spear". And guess what! Those can be broken down further too! 幺乡 breaks down into 幺 and 戍 breaks down into 丿and 戈.
♥Simplified: And then if we were to look at the simplified version 手机 breaks into the following radicals: hand (手) just like the traditional. And then the second symbol breaks down into tree (木) and desk/small table (几).
So yeah. I adore the language. Am I perfectly fluent? Pff, NO. There are over 86,000 characters in Mandarin. Give my white ass a break XD With many ♥'s I hope you enjoy the Runic setup! Alot of love went into it. 谢谢! 我爱你们!

Jìng .... Mirror
The piece of paper shimmers until the entirety of the paper is a reflective surface now acting as a mirror. Note that the paper's physique itself does not transform into anything similar to glass. It will still bend or blow away by a stronger wind. It is when the paper is ripped that the spell ends.

Diànbàng .... Flashlight
Upon finishing the symbols the paper will begin, not to glow, but to shine a white light. Depending on how big the symbols are written determines how bright the light will shine. A common practice is to roll up the paper so as to resemble an actual flashlight allowing the beam to be more focused. It is when the paper is ripped that the spell ends.
放大镜
Fàngdàjìng .... Magnifying Glass
The entirety of the paper will turn transparent with the added bonus of magnifying what is beneath it as well. Further symbols detailing how strong the magnification is may be added. It is when the paper is ripped that the spell ends.
望远镜
Wàngyuǎnjìng .... Telescope
With this spell the paper is commonly rolled up to more resemble a telescope. Peering through, far away sights will appear clearer and with sharper clarity. A more educated student can even add detailing symbols to specify if the telescope will automatically refract itself correctly in allowing the eye to see better. A less educated student can still add details to allow a manual turning of the rolled up paper so one can adjust manually to each distance wished to be seen clearly. It is when the paper is ripped that the spell ends
改變顏色的外觀
Gǎibiàn yánsè de wàiguān .... Morph Colored Appearance
This is the Rune that teachers genuinely use to teach the importance of writing out details. A good example is to specify to change the color of one's hair blue because if not the Rune is much more unstable often occurring in turning the entire person blue (eyes, teeth, skin, etc). It's all in the details. Have fun~

Chuàngjiàn dāo .... Create Knife
When finished in writing the symbols the practitioner is instructed to grasp the bottom portion of the paper to "inform the spell" of where the handle would be preferred to be. The paper will then harden and sharpen as well into a material that can slice a stone. When the paper no longer is in contact with the writer in some way or another is when the spell is broken. Examples: knife is dropped, thrown from the person's hand, etc

Xìnxī sù .... Pheromone
Where the rest of the spells listed here are taught by professors, this one however was discovered by a student decades ago and ever since has been taught from upperclassman to underclassman. One writes upon a piece of paper and places it upon the skin of another, wither that be the back of the neck or the back of the hand, etc. Once the paper makes contact it will adhere itself to the person and will raise the level of pheromones usually causing the person to trigger sexual interest. The difficult peeling off of the paper is what breaks the spell. Noteworthy to mention, if it is discovered that this spell was used by a student to assist in any sort of forced interaction there will be an investigation and the student found guilty will be immediately expelled.

Zhòngliàng qīng .... Light Weight
When finished writing out the symbols one places the paper upon the item in question. Once it makes contact it will adhere itself to that item and will decrease its weight in accordance to the size of how big the symbols are written on the paper. The larger the font size, the lighter the item will become exponentially.

Zhòngliàng jí .... Heavy Weight
When finished writing out the symbols one places the paper upon the item in question. Once it makes contact it will adhere itself to that item and will increase its weight in accordance to the size of how big the symbols are written on the paper. The larger the font size, the heavier the item will become exponentially.

Shēnghuó zhézhǐ .... Living Origami
This is mostly a parlor trick and holds no significant advantage (unless you're really clever). By writing the symbols and folding the paper appropriately the origami critter shall come to life. Walking, flying, climbing, it may even nuzzle and cuddle if you write so in the details for a love interest's affections (or get really lonely during exam season, you'll only be judged a little bit by your peers XD). The spell is broken when the critter is crushed and can no longer function, is torn, burned, soaked, etc.

Shìbié móshù .... Identify Magic
Rune users utilize this spell in differing ways from one another. Wither rolled up or allowed to stay flat the paper now allows the user to peer through and identify magic. It makes all magics glow or shimmer in differing hues depending on what kind of magic it is. Runes will glow when peering through the page, enchanted items will; religiously blessed items, people who are cursed, even Magi and their magical bounty (example: a magically created flame).

This is the level that approved professor characters will be placed at. Not too newbie where someone will ask "um, why are you a teacher?" but still allowing room for the character to upgrade their abilities. runes learned

Yèjiān shìlì .... Night Vision
Once again the way this Rune is utilized differentiates from person to person depending on their preference. Some put the Rune directly onto themselves shifting their own physical eyes. Warning on that avenue: This is very painful for the person both when the spell is enacted and when the spell ends thus changing their eyes back. Others put the Rune upon their corrective lenses aka their glasses. While others still use it in a similar fashion as the telescope Rune under the Amateur Level by peering through the paper itself.

Zài shuǐshàng xíngzǒu .... Walk On Water
The only way that has been successful in using this Rune is to actually write out two Runes for one person. You place the piece of paper on the bottom of your feet/shoes, the Rune adheres itself to you and afterwards you can have a pleasant wavey stroll~

Zhìliáo qīngwéi de jíbìng .... Cure Minor Sickness
Placing the fully written Rune upon either yourself or another it will adhere itself to them until the task that is asked of it (which will be fully written out upon the Rune if the writer is wise enough) is completed. When the minor sickness has been cured the paper will un-attach itself and flutter lifelessly to the ground, no longer capable of such an action again. Each of these written Runes are good for one use only. Minor sicknesses consist of colds, flues, headaches, etc. Reminder: Unlike Magi Magic, Runic Magic is more blunt and though it will accomplish the task asked of it the process will be painful for the person.

Zhàohuàn .... Summon
Again, this spell is all in the details. At the Apprentice level teachers instruct a student how to summon an item first. If successful then they will teach the student how to summon a living plant. It's all in the details but also mentally visualizing the item wished to be brought to them. If the spell is performed correctly the item or plant will appear before them in a teleport sort of fashion. But that's the extent at this level. Summoning people or animals is forbidden as an Apprentice. If a student were to attempt to do so at this level and it was discovered they would be expelled immediately.

Tānhuàn .... Paralyze
The Rune is placed upon the person you wish it to affect. This Rune's affects will cause great pain to the person in question and will, as long as the Rune is upon their being, will temporarily cause them unable to move. Details are important since using this Rune could also paralyze their lungs and heart muscles as well causing death.

Zhìliáo dú .... Cure Poison

Zhìyù xiǎo shāngkǒu .... Cure Minor Wounds
This Rune is able to heal sprains, non-life-threatening flesh wounds, and pulled muscles now. Yes, technically the same Rune as is taught as an Apprentice but due to the increased amount of pain and possible negative side effects that could be caused by a careless lack of details, students aren't allowed to do such things until at this level. The Rune will remove itself once the task specified is completed.

Shǒuliúdàn .... Grenade
The most common manner in which one uses this Rune is by wrinkling up the paper into a ball and once it becomes heavier in their hands, chucks it in the direction they wish to. Upon making contact with something other than the writer it will explode. If there are any other specifications you wish to make be sure to write the symbols in detailing so.
召唤
Zhàohuàn .... Summon
Summoning animals is taught at this level. Again, It's all in the details but also mentally visualizing the animal is a major part of this spell. This is done mostly as a defensive move. Example: summoning a wolf to get rid of that pesky mugger holding you up at knife point. Warning: Just because you summon the beast doesn't mean you have control over them. Be wise in what you bring over. Summoning people is forbidden, period. If a student or professor were to attempt to do so at this level and it was discovered they would be expelled immediately.

基本信息 You are highly respected and trusted, wither you are a student or professor. When one reaches this level you are granted the strongest version of ink that exists. All of your spells, even Amateur level spells, are much more potent and powerful now and can last longer as well.
An optional additional benefit of reaching Master Rank is if your character has been networking and proving themselves to the Head Master of the University he may share with you the recipe to the ink. This includes the University's metaphoric darker skeletons in the closet ... and perhaps quite a few literal skeletons as well. Do you really want to know? Zhìyù zhìmìng shāng .... Heal Major Wound
The Rune is capable in healing torn muscles, broken bones, and life threatening wounds. What is forbidden at the time is attempting to heal someone of severe life threatening diseases and healing a disability such as blindness and paralysis. All attempts of such acts, due to the bluntness of Runic Magic, have ended in killing the person or stretching out the healing process too long (in attempt to not overwhelm the body into shutting down due to shock) where they killed themselves. Obviously the more extreme and severe a wound is, the more painful it will be in healing it often causing the person to be temporarily in a comatose state for a time period afterwards. Just as always, the Rune will remove itself once the task specified is completed.
